Hair Update

This was last week at the Healthy Hair Indaba. My hair was flat ironed so the textures blended well.

Now that the excitement of the Healthy Hair Indaba has passed I can give you an update of my hair.

As regular readers of the blog will know, I was pregnant for most of 2013.  I had my little boy at the end of November.  Because I was pregnant, I stopped relaxing my hair.  This is something I have done with all my pregnancies.  My last relaxer was in November 2012.

I’m often asked how I have managed to stretch the time between relaxers for so long.  My answer is that I have managed by getting protective styles (I had braids and cornrows often during this time).  I have also been doing very simple styles.  Most days my hair is in a simple bun.  Very little combing and styling.  I have also been washing my hair in sections and keeping it in twists while washing and deep conditioning.  I must admit it hasn’t been easy.  I’ve had to be extra careful to avoid excess / unnecessary breakage.

So what are my hair plans going forward?  I’m planning to relax my hair again mid-March 2014.  I have reached my goal of bra strap length but I have a feeling I may cut my hair back to arm pit length.  The reason for this is that the ends of my hair are likely to be thinner than the rest of the hair because of how long I have gone without relaxing.  The thinner ends are likely to annoy me!

The only issue I’m going to grapple with is where to go to get my relaxer done.  The hairstylist who has done my relaxers since 2011 stopped hairdressing and moved out of town.  I don’t know who I can trust now to do my hair.  The hairstylist I used to use understood how I liked my relaxers done (texlaxed) and also that I liked to leave my hairline out since I don’t see the need of applying relaxer crème to the ‘baby hair’.  My quest for a new hairstylist begins.  I have no idea where to even begin looking!  I will keep you posted on how things transpire.

The Healthy Hair Indaba 2014

The inaugural Healthy Hair Indaba (HHI) was held this past Saturday the 22nd of February 2014 and boy did we have fun!  We spent many late nights over the past year or so planning and it was great to see everything we had planned unfold.  Our aim in hosting the HHI was to get like-minded women under one roof to discuss healthy hair.

The event was planned and hosted by myself along with four other bloggers (we call ourselves the Hair Gurus)  – Carice, Kavuli, Aisha and Wisaal.  It was held at the Motions Academy in Johannesburg CBD.  We hosted 60 attendees though we had about 90 people in attendance including media as well as representatives from some sponsors.

Inside the Motions Academy

The HHI was divided into two sections by a break.  Before the break we discussed hair problems / issues which included hair myths and common hair problems.  After the break we covered solutions to the hair problems, including the basics of hair care, product ingredients and kids hair care.  There was also a styling session before and after the break.

HHI goodie bag

Contents of the goodie bag

This HHI would not have been a success without the sponsors who were very generous.  The goodie bag alone was something else.  It was described often as a goodie bag on steroids!  Each product in the goodie bag was handpicked by the hair Gurus and we made sure that the bag was filled with mostly full size products.  The products on the goodie bag were valued at R1,667 (US$160).  I kept saying I’ve been to many events but never one where the goodie bag had so much stuff and was so heavy!

We also had lots of giveaways throughout the event, 34 to be precise! With 60 attendees more than half the women present managed to walk away with a prize.  The giveaways were worth R14,000 (R1,400).

Wisaal in the Citizen newspaper

We have received plenty of love from the media.  On the day of the HHI we trended on twitter under the hashtag #HHI14.  We also had a picture appear in the Citizen newspaper on the 24th of February as well as an article on the Citizen website.  On the 26th of February Carice was invited to Redi Thlabi’s show on Talk 702 to discuss hair.  You can listen to the podcast here.  We were also filmed for the show The Link that airs on SABC 1 on Wednesday at 6pm.  Our media partner was True Love magazine and they were also in attendance to cover the event.

Answering questions for ‘The Link’

As to how I wore my hair on this day, I had my hair flat ironed by Kavuli.  I wanted to wear it straight.  The flat ironing managed to blend the two textures I have on my head.

It was really great to meet some of the women who read my blog.  I loved putting faces to the names.  You can see more pics on the blogs facebook page.

In summary – it was a lovely day.

I got some Scurl!

7 Feb

scurl

My friend Irene got me some Scurl Curl No Drip Activator Moisturiser from Zimbabwe.  I was so grateful.  We haven’t had this moisturiser in South Africa for some time now.  This is one of the first moisturisers I used when I started taking proper care of my hair.  I even did a post on it back in 2011.  I found it really moisturising back then, I wondered if I would feel the same this time round.

The first thing I noticed is that the ingredients have changed.  I wondered if I would still like it or if the change in formula would affect its efficacy.  They have added oils (argan and olive oil) and they have also removed parabens.  The main ingredients (water, glycerin, cetearyl alcohol and propylene glycol) remain the same.  I’m happy to say I still love this moisturiser.  Along with the change in formula is also a change in fragrance.  The moisturiser now has a sweet smell.  I don’t really mind the new smell because it’s quite light.

Regular readers will know that my last relaxer was more than a year ago.  I have major new growth on my head!  This moisturiser made it very soft and to detangle.  My hair has become quite difficult to handle with the two different textures I have on my head but this moisturiser makes it much easier.  I will definitely make sure I don’t run out.  I will make sure I ask my friends and relatives for more bottles when I run out.

Irene bought the moisturiser for US$6 (approximately R66) in Pick n Pay Kamfinsa (Harare, Zimbabwe).  It’s a 236ml / 8fl oz bottle.

Ingredients

Water, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Argan Oil, Olive Oil,  Acetamide MEA, Ceteth-20, Olealkonium Chloride, Stearalkonium Chloride, Panthenol, Simethicone, DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance, Benzyl Benzoate, Linalool, Benzyl Salicylate, Limonene, Coumarin, Alpha-isomethyl Ionone

Any of you using Scurl Activator Moisturiser?  What do you think of it?

Happy New Year

17 Jan

I know it’s late but happy new year to you!  I’ve had a great break and managed to spend quality time with family as well as with the new baby.  Thank you all for the well wishes.  He is fine and growing fast.

It’s now the 3rd anniversary of the blog.  I am amazed at how fast time has flown by.  Thank you for reading the blog.  I have many exciting posts (and things) lined up for this year.  I am looking forward to it and I hope you will keep reading the blog.

As for my hair, I had my last relaxer more than a year ago.  I choose not to relax my hair while pregnant.  I’ve managed to go so long between relaxers by doing protective styles (braids and cornrows).  When my hair is not in a protective style I do something really simple e.g. a bun.  I’ve been wary of post partum shedding.  I’ve been looking out for it.  It hasn’t started yet (thank goodness).  I do plan on relaxing my hair again, I’m just not sure when I will do it.

At the beginning of the year my hair goals for 2013 were to grow my hair to MBL (mid back length) as well as to practice more protective styling.  I really do not think my hair is mid back length yet.  I will know for sure when I relax again. I’m pretty sure it is full BSL (bra strap length) though.  As for protective styling, I definitely managed that with all the cornrows and braids I got last year.

I’m now back to regular blogging.  Please keep reading🙂
