Hair, skin and nails vitamins

23 Aug

I started taking hair, skin and nails (HSN) vitamins last week Wednesday, the same day that I got my relaxer.  I bought them to see if they would make any change to my hair.  An improvement to the skin and nails will be a bonus. J  I generally eat very poorly and the decision to take these vitamins actually came from that.  I put out a question on facebook asking the page members if they are taking HSN vitamins.  It turns out that a few are taking them but many had been contemplating it just as I had been.  I decided then to do more research and write a blog post.

I am taking Vital Multitime Hair Skin and Nails Vitamins.  I bought them from a pharmacy.  There were many brands to choose from.  What made me choose this particular brand is because it is a ‘one a day’ as I did not want to be popping pills more than once a day.  I also chose them because the box said ‘multi-vitamin and mineral’.  I thought I could also benefit from the other vitamins and minerals that do not necessarily benefit hair, skin and nails.  The pills themselves are big and brown and have a ‘multivitamin’ smell!  I do not know how best to describe it!!  I will take them for the next 3 months then make an assessment and see if there is any difference to my hair’ skin and nails.

Hair, skin and nail vitamins are formulated to keep hair’ skin and nails healthy.  So how do HSN vitamins benefit the hair, skin and nails?  Well HSN vitamins include some of the following:

B Vitamins

B vitamins are sometimes called beauty vitamins.  They provide the nutrients that make your hair, skin and nails thrive. A lack of B vitamins affects your body in multiple ways and often becomes visible through your hair, skin and nails.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

MSM is a natural organic sulfur compound that is found in plant and animal tissue.  MSM contributes to healthy collagen and keratin which are essential for healthy hair, skin and nails.

Omega 3 and 6

Omega 3 and Omega 6 are essential fatty acids that are essential for health and well being.  Receiving these vitamins through food sources and as a dietary supplement is crucial to the beauty, growth and development of your hair skin and nails.

Minerals, in conjunction with vitamins, are a significant factor for hair, nails and skin. Minerals aid in nourishing the hair, nails and skin.  In particular, the minerals calcium, iron, zinc, copper, magnesium and manganese work together and provide the components essential to hair, skin and nail growth.

So why not just take a multivitamin?  Well, HSN vitamins include many of the same ingredients as regular multivitamins but also have in addition biotin, silicon, MSM, l-cysteine, l-methionine, panthenol etc.

What I came to realise in reading up on this subject is that the success of the HSN vitamins may depend on your general diet and what deficiencies you are experiencing.  If you already take a multivitamin and eat healthy balanced meals, adding HSN vitamins may not make a difference as you are already getting what you need from your diet.

HSN vitamins do not work overnight – you need to keep taking them for at least 3 – 6 months before you see any significant change.  If your body has a deficiency the body will first need to correct this and send nutrients to the most important areas of the body first – i.e. internal organs, brain, etc – and only then will it go to the hair, skin and nails.  The hair, skin and nails are some of the last things in the body to receive nutrients.

All this got me thinking though and coming to the conclusion that taking HSN vitamins alone will not answer all your hair problems.  Your hairs health is also dependent on other factors like diet, exercise and how you take care of your hair.

Remember, as with all pills, there can be side effects.  Consult your doctor before taking any supplements, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

I used Vigro after i’d undergone some radio-active treatment and it restored my hair. I have a friend using it becuase her hair is thinning and she has a bald patch – it’s also working for her.

      Hi Nillionaires
I have seen many adverts for Vigro. I must confess they interested me! I thought it would be too strong for me though.

Alfa lipoic acid is a good supplement for those looking for healthier skin. However, a vitamin alone will not do the trick…you must include a healthy eating regimen as well. I was fasting a few months ago and started drinking a lot of carrot juice…it’s works wonders for everything.

Thank you Marcia for the tips 🙂 Eating healthy is a challenge for me. I spend my days running around and sometimes I only properly at night.

      hi Sarah
If your hair is shedding excessively you can take garlic pills as well as use products with garlic. Just speak to your doc first obviously before taking them. I remember reading that garlic pills can thin the blood.
