Focus on argan oil

14 Feb

I thought I would do a post on argan oil.  I haven’t used this oil yet but it’s something I’ve been mulling.  I thought I would share my research with you.

Referred to as ‘liquid gold’, argan oil is one of those oils that has been around for ages but has gained immense popularity in recent years.  It is added to so many hair care products right now.  I like to refer to it as the ‘flavour of the moment’.  The oil is produced from the nuts of the argan tree which is is grown almost exclusively in Morocco.  Traditionally the oil was made by harvesting undigested argan pits from the waste of goats which eat the fruit.

Argan oil contains a high concentration of vitamin e, fatty acids and natural antioxidants.  In hair, it has the benefit of infiltrating the hair shaft and improving elasticity.  It is also non greasy, sealing in moisture and adding lustre and shine to the hair.

So how can this oil be used for the hair?   Because argan oil (in its pure form) is really expensive (I got a quote from a health shop of the equivalent of US$25 for a 50ml bottle) many women choose to mix it with other carrier oils (like jojoba, coconut, castor, sweet almond etc) to make it last longer.  It can be used as a pre shampoo treatment (mixed in with conditioner or other oils), a few drops can be applied to damp / moisturised hair to help seal in moisture, a few drops can also be used before styling (especially when styling with heat).  As for skin, it is great for anti – aging, wrinkle reduction, acne, psoriasis, eczema, stretch marks, sunburn and many other skin conditions.

As I mentioned above some brands are adding argan oil to some of their products.  Crème of Nature has a whole argan oil range.  Another brand that is gaining momentum right now is Moroccan Oil.

I will let you know if I give it a try.

The shop that gave me a quotation is a shop in Pretoria. Its a health shop at Glenfair Shopping Centre along Lynwood road. Their number is 012 348 6110. Its also not easy to find in SA. I think its because of the cost.
