Kiehl’s launch

25 Sep

I attended the launch of the first African Kiehl’s store in Sandton City mall recently thanks to Destiny Magazine.  Kiehl’s is an American cosmetics brand that sells premium facial, hair, and body care products.  It was founded as a pharmacy in New York in 1851.  It is owned by the L’Oréal Group and currently has more than 30 retail stores worldwide.  I was surprised at how competitively their merchandise was priced compared to other skincare brands like Clarins, Dermalogica, Estee Lauder etc.  I figured one of the reasons must be their simple packaging.  Kiehl’s also does not market their products in the traditional sense, they rely on a ‘try before you buy’ policy where they hand out product samples as well as word of mouth endorsements from existing customers.

testing some sun lotion

With my interest in hair I naturally gravitated towards the hair care section.  They have quite a range and there are several sulphate free shampoos to choose from.  What caught my eye though was the Superbly Smoothing Argan range which is made for ‘coarse, unruly’ hair.  Sounds like a dream for a woman with natural hair.  The hair care products were priced between R200 and R400 (US$25 and US$50) depending on the product and size.

the goodie bag

We left the launch with goodie bags (naturally!!).  I also bought some Kiehls Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50 sun lotion.  I love it because it is very light and does not leave my skin oily.

The store is within Edgars at Sandton City though they have their own entrance too. The Super Fluid cost me about R380 i think. I can’t remember the exact amount and i threw away the receipt.

Hi Tendayi, thanks for this post. I’m always excited about new products for us natural girls. I’ll definitely be heading over to Sandton City and checking it out. Are there any other lines you’ve recently tried and liked?
